How to aim and install a yagi

This page is general education for homeowners and radio hobbyists. It is not a certified engineering plan, electrical inspection, or substitute for manufacturer instructions.

Aiming basics

  1. Know the target: Broadcast towers for TV, a cell site for boosters, or a repeater/satellite path for ham.
  2. Compass + map: Convert tower coordinates to a bearing from your location. Account for magnetic declination if you use a magnetic compass.
  3. Peak, then lock: For TV, run a signal meter or channel scan while a helper rotates the mast a few degrees at a time. For ham, listen for peak signal / best SNR.
  4. Watch multipath: Reflections off buildings or hills can create false peaks. Prefer the heading that stays stable.

Mast & mounting

  • Use hardware rated for outdoor wind loads; follow the antenna’s mast-diameter range (many compact yagis list ~30–40 mm clamps).
  • Keep the boom level (or as specified) and elements oriented for the intended polarization.
  • Leave drip loops in coax so water does not run into connectors or wall penetrations.

Coax & grounding (basics)

  • Match cable type to the system: 75 Ω RG6 is common for TV; 50 Ω coax is typical for ham and many booster kits.
  • Weatherproof outdoor connectors (self-amalgamating tape / approved sealants as appropriate).
  • Bonding and grounding of masts and entry panels should follow the National Electrical Code and local amendments — when in doubt, hire a qualified electrician or professional antenna installer.

After install

Rescan TV channels, confirm booster status lights, or check SWR/power with appropriate ham test gear. Re-check hardware after the first big windstorm.

Safety note: Never install antennas near power lines. Use fall protection on roofs and ladders. Improper grounding can create shock and lightning hazards — follow local code and manufacturer instructions, or hire a professional.
